I emailed Ron Mason MSU Athletic Director
I was surprised to get a response back from him (or one of his assitants). If we go by Mason's word, it looks like Spartan fans will be stuck with Smith at least until the end of the season. But, history tells us he doesn't believe this philosophy. He canned Bobby Williams mid season after a 49-3 loss to Michigan in 2002. The following is my email to, and response from MSU athletic Director Ron Mason:
Mr. Ron Mason,
Please consider letting John L. Smith go. He actually said this after the Illinois game...
"The way we practiced is what you saw," said coach John L. Smith. "I can't get them to go, and apparently I don't have the answer."
If he cannot motivate the team he shouldn't be coaching our Spartans. It's embarrassing to tell friends and colleagues I am a Spartan. I think losing their coach before the Michigan game might motivate them. Keeping their coach obviously won't.
Thank you

Thank you for your email. Let me assure you that everyone associated with our football program is focusing on the next game and will continue to do so for the rest of the season.
From all my years of coaching I've learned that you never completely evaluate a program in the middle of the season. Coaches, like all department personnel, are evaluated on an annual basis.
Thank you for your support of Spartan Athletics.
